Contest

Project18 January 2013 was the official inauguration of the international contest for creating the new architectural-artistic concept of the Memorial Site in the area of the former German-Nazi extermination camp in Sobibór. The contest’s organizer was the State Museum at Majdanek, which, since 1 May 2012, is the owner of the part of the Extermination Memorial’s area in Sobibór and takes care of the Memorial Site.

The contest was the next stage of the international project of establishing the Museum Memorial Site in the area of the former German-Nazi extermination camp in Sobibór, carried out by four states (Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Israel) on the basis of Memorandum of Understanding. In compliance with the recommendations of the Steering Group, the aim of the contest is to obtain the best functionally complex concept of The Memorial Site in the area of the former German-Nazi extermination camp for the Jewish in Sobibor, considering the character and importance of the place that combines the commemorating, museum and educational functions. The main point of the new concept of the Memorial Site is to commemorate the victims, who were murdered in the German-Nazi extermination camp of Sobibor through maintaining the mass graves and presenting the whole area as both a silent witness and a tangible proof of the mass crime of an unimaginable size.

The State Museum at Majdanek entrusted the Foundation for the Polish-German Reconciliation, which cooperates with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage on the international project of establishing the Museum Memorial Site, the execution of activities connected with the performance of the contest.

The conditions of participation in the contest as well as the rules of preparing the contest projects were given in the Regulations of the Contest, which was published on the website of the State Museum at Majdanek, on the website of the Foundation for the Polish-German Reconciliation and on the website of the project. The applications for the permission to take part in the contest were submitted by the participants until 18 February 2013 in the site of the Foundation for the Polish-German Reconciliation in Warsaw.

The function of secretary was filled by:

Legal service was provided by the company Grupa Sienna sp. z o.o.

The first meeting of the Contest Jury was held on 15 and 16 January 2013.

Last and decisive meetings of the Contest Jury were held on 9-11 and 18 July 2013.

In February 2013 the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation received 152 applications for the permission to take part in the contest from both national as well foreign participants. 111 participants met the participation requirements and were invited to submission of contest projects. 63 of them submitted their contest projects. Announcement of the results took place on 18 July 2013 in the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

The Contest Jury awarded three prizes and one honorable mention. The awards were received by:

1st prize – participant no. 171717 – Marcin Urbanek, Łukasz Mieszkowski and RE S.C. Piotr Michalewicz, Mateusz Tański

The second prize – participant no. 000029 – Stelmach i Partnerzy Biuro Architektoniczne Sp. z o. o. (Stelmach and Partners, Architects Office Sp. z o. o.)

The third prize – participant no. 976737 – Biuro Projektów Budownictwa Ogólnego „Budopol” S.A. (General Construction Projects Office ,,Budopol” S.A.)

Honorable mention was given to the participant no. 177771 – Pracownia Architektoniczna 1997 Sp. z o. o. (Architectural Studio 1997 Sp. z o. o.)

In accordance with the provisions of the Regulations of the Contest each of the three rewarded projects had a chance to be implemented, as their authors were invited to take part in the public contract awarding procedure, led in the negotiations mode. The proceeding was completed on 8 January 2014 with contact award for the execution of project documentation concerning the arrangement of  the Extermination Memorial’s area in Sobibór. The contract award was given to the first contest winner (Marcin Urbanek, RE: S.C. Piotr Michalewicz Mateusz Tański, Łukasz Mieszkowski), which presented the most advantageous offer in the public contract award procedure.

Public disclosure of the information according to the contractor selected took place on 14 October 2013 during the 70th anniversary of the Uprising in the German-Nazi extermination camp in Sobibór. It was then the presentation of the contest project chosen for the realization was presented to the audience.
